It was a great pleasure interviewing  Paige Ann Turilli, and her humble father Steven Turilli ( the backbone and dedicated force) behind this true Champion Of Champions. I was lucky enough to be in attendance at the World Championship in Glasgow when Paige Ann won World Champion 2010 and the excitement and the electricity in the hall was phenomenal.

Paige Ann is a very inspirational and wonderful young lady and I consider myself very, very lucky to know her. Of course as a fellow New Yorker we were all very proud of Paige Ann, Julia O'Rourke from the Petri School, NY and all the Americans that took home the gold.  Paige Ann's dedication, discipline, passion and accomplishment of all her Major Championships in 2010 is commendable.

Paige Ann has a great future, she will be one of our Modern Young American Women that exemplifies, her aspirations, ambitions, intellect, social responsibility and Irish heritage.  I look forward to watch what 2011 and the future holds for such a young accomplished competitor/performer.  She is a credit to her parents, teachers, her heritage and to the Art of Irish Dance.

What is your full name? Where did you grow up, how old are you? Where are your parents and grandparents from? What connection do you have with Ireland if any?

Paige Ann Turilli. I am 14 years old.  I have grown up in Pearl River New York. My parents are from Pearl River and my grandparents are from New York City. All of my great grandparents on my mother's side of the family have emigrated from Ireland.  On my father's side, they are from Ireland and Italy.

How did you first get interested in Irish Dancing?

I had a friend in Pre School who told me about Irish Dancing and how much fun it was, so my parents decided to sign me up.

When and where did you start Irish Dancing?

I was 4 years when my parents first went to sign me up but the class was already full.  I finally started in September 2001 at the age of 5.  My first teacher was Sean Reagan and I have been with Inishfree ever since.

What is your own personal and greatest  achievement outside irish dancing?

 Academic award which include maintaining my place on the high honor role throughout my middle school years.

Why and when did you select the school that you represent and dance for?

There were six Irish Dancing schools in my area, but my friend's mom recommended Inishfree. My friends mom said "all of the kids have a good time jumping around on Friday afternoons"

How long did it take you to reach the level of dancing that your in? What were the greatest challenges you faced?

In 2002, I moved up to preliminary championship to compete in my first oireachtas as an under six.  Then in 2003, I earned my two first place wins and moved up into open as under seven.

Was there a big interest in the Irish Dancing classes in the local community?

 Yes, there is a huge interest in Irish Dancing in my community.  At one point, there were six different Irish Dancing schools in my area.

Is there a big 'Irish contingent' in the school that your with or does the interest in Irish Dancing span many cultures?

I never really gave this much thought before … but I think there are probably more dancers that are not 100% Irish than those that are.  I think it is funny when my friend Erin's Cuban father gets all excited about Irish Dancing or when my Italian Grandfather follows my results online.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

In the future, I would like to join nor of the Irish Dancing shows that go on tour.  I would also like to become an anesthesiologist.

How long and hard did you work to make it to World Championships? What was it like when they calculated all the judges results and your name was announced as 2010 World Champion?  How does it feel to accomplish your goals and be the reigning 2010 WORD CHAMPION for your age group?  What is the next step?? Nationals and future Major Competitions?  Where do you see yourself in the future?


Coming up to the Worlds I practiced 5 or 6 days a week for at least 1 1/2 - 2 hours a day.  As the totals were coming up the scores were very close and we thought I had won but we were not positive.  Once my scores and the other girl's scores came up, we saw that I had won by 20 points. It was an unbelievable feeling when they announced my name as the 2010 World Champion.  My goal after the Worlds was to defend my national title, which I am happy to say I achieved.  From here I looked forward to my Oireachtas which I am also happy to say I achieved and now onto the 2011 competitive schedule.

Tell us a little something about your school and your teachers and any advise you would like to give to future Irish Dancers or anyone interested in starting irish dancing.  Please contribute Anything else interesting that would add?

I feel very lucky to be part of the Inishfree School, we have a school theme song "We are Inishfree" set to the music of "We are family" because that is what our school is like, one big family. When we are all together, we always end up singing that song as a group.  I have 2 really great teachers, Sean Reagan and Colleen Quigley-Carey.

As I become more involved in Irish dancing, so did my dad.  Sean would spend time at the end of my classes showing my dad important things that i needed to practice and perfect.  As my Dad got more and more involved he became really good at breaking my steps down and helping me practice.  I feel really fortunate to have my dad who is like a 3rd teacher to me.  Sean and Colleen have a saying that they always remind us of  "TBGA" True Believer, Goal Achiever!  They have always challenged me to set goals for myself and they along with my Dad have have given me the support I needed to achieve my goals.
It makes me feel good when I do well and I make them proud.

From when I first started dancing, Sean told my parents that he thought I had potential and he helped me in every way possible.

The Inishfree World Party Honoring our 2010 World Champion, ANN PAIGE TURILLI! A Party fit for a Princess!

I also was privileged to an invitation to Paige's World Party at the prestigious Reid Castle.  Teachers traveled from as far away as England and Ireland to celebrate her accomplishments with friends, family, dancers and her teachers.  The famous Cake Boss made her cake and a sculpture of her out of chocolate. The famous musician/DJ Conor McGurk, electrified the Castle with music and kept everyone dancing till the we hours of the morning.

Those Dancin' Feet : Fidget Feet's Irish Aerial Dance Fest in Letterkenny Co. Donegal

Irish company Fidget Feet Aerial Dance Theatre present the only aerial dance production of this year’s Dance Base programme, and their thrilling show promises to sweep you off your feet.

Aerial dance – a blend of dance and circus - has been practiced since the early 1970s but has recently reached an elevated status - in the public's consciousness. It has always been an elevated art form, involving dancing suspended from ropes and harnesses.

Founded in 2000, Fidget Feet also perform outdoor work and recently they presented a show in Edinburgh.

The work featured seven performers, including a live DJ who had “a very important and shamanic role”, and the artists- “a big company in this poor climate” - will consume all the space.

Fidget Feet founder Chantal McCormick says, “If anyone likes dance, using circus and aerial dance just take it one step higher! In dance you only use the ground and there is such a lot of space above you. With aerial we fill that space with dance too. Everyone loves watching aerial dance and circus, and RAW was a treat for the senses”.

"RAW was set in a nightclub, and both background and lighting explore the spectrum of blues and purples. We might assume that dark undertones come from more than just the designer’s palette, but while the dancers don’t spend much time on the floor, audiences might expect to leave the venue feeling less than uplifted. The performers show some darker sides of human nature, but you need the dark with the light – life is all about balance”.

This is certainly true for aerial dance, which requires not only balance but also formidable core and upper-body strength. Fidget Feet’s dancers are trained in dance and circus skills, with Chantal having trained at London School of Contemporary Dance, where she was “always interested in mixing dance with other art forms”, before going to London’s Circus Space to learn trapeze.

“In truth,” she says, “I never wanted to do aerial, I just fell into it. I remember when I was hanging forty meters off a building about to abseil down and thinking “why am I up here? I’m a dancer, I should be on the ground, not up here!”. But then once you start you’re hooked.”

As well as floor-bound dancing, the dancers use ropes and harnesses, and there is even pole dancing. As well as conventional pole dance, the company will also use a Chinese pole, “climbing up the pole and hanging and sliding down”. The Chinese pole originates from the circus and Chantal says it “takes a lot of upper body strength: it’s a boy thing!”

Fidget Feet’s IADF is a unique opportunity to experience the joy of dancing in the air and will include classes for beginners through to advanced aerial dancers, circus aerialists and anyone who wants to keep fit.

The main aim of the Fest is to bring international and national circus teachers to the Fest and offer high quality classes to aerialists, dancers, actors and anyone that might want to give it a go; There are classes to suit all levels of experience.

A Fairies Tail - Tullynally Castle, Sat 27 & Sun 28 of August, 2011

For one magical weekend Fidget Feet Aerial dance Theatre & Westmeath County Council present A Fairies Tail, a series of performances and Children’s Circus Workshops.

Set in the mystical gardens of Tullynally Castle, one mile outside Castlepollard on Edgeworthstown Rd, Co.Westmeath. Performances will take place in August on Sat 27th @ 1pm + 6pm and Sun 28th @ 1pm. Circus Workshops for children on Saturday and Sunday at 3.30pm (1 hour duration).

Michael Londra, the lead singer from "Riverdance", launches into his brand new National PBS Concert Special, accompanied by the world's best in Celtic musicians, including the sensational sister duo Sephira, the legendary Frankie Gavin and De Dannan, and phenomenal Celtic dancers. Filmed in the Historic California Theatre, this concert special is truly "Beyond Celtic".

Michael Londra is from the opera capital of Ireland, a small town on the South East coast called Wexford. He decided in the early 90s to follow his heart and started singing professionally. His leap of faith was rewarded when he soon became a leading man in musical theater in Dublin playing many roles. US director and choreographer, Larry Fuller asked Michael to play Bobby Kennedy in the world premier of "JFK" where he was noticed by the producers of Riverdance.

He was offered the role of lead singer in the US National Tour which included performances at Radio City Music Hall and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In March 2000, Michael again was offered the position of lead singer in the new production of Riverdance on Broadway, taking the role from acclaimed Irish singer Brian Kennedy. This was the platform from which Michael's recording and producing career began.

Michael's first album "Celt" was produced by acclaimed producer Steve Skinner who co-produced the Grammy nominated soundtrack of RENT. He has worked as an arranger/co-producer for Bette Midler and Celine Dion and has collaborated many times with Arif Mardin, producer of Norah Jones' acclaimed CD. The album was released in 15 countries worldwide selling particularly well in Korea where it reached No 1 in the World Music Charts.

He appears with Pavarotti, Bocelli, Il Divo, Sarah Brightman and Kathryn Jenkins on the Universal Records Asia 2009 release Arias : Ancora.

His recording of Danny Boy was described by The Irish Emigrant in New York as "One of the best recordings of Danny Boy in history." The Youtube video of this recording has been downloaded by 3 million people as of October 2010. CapitalCeltic.com names Michael as "one of the greatest Irish singers of our time".

He has performed as guest singer Irish supergroups De Dannan and Teada

In 2004 Michael was chosen for the role of Jesus in "The Passion of the Christ Symphony" This production was based on the score of Oscar nominee John Debney and had its spectacular US premiere in Hollywood on September 11, 2005.

Michael's work with partner Jean Clancy on the Celtic Woman project created by Sharon Browne was a turning point in Michael"s career off stage. He has been involved in many productions around the world as an artistic director and producer. This year CELT Productions collaborated with Celtic Entertainments to bring Dance of Desire to China and with Harmony artists to bring Caution:Men at Work touring China also.

He created Radiocelt.com in Chicago in 2003 which is part of the Accuradio network (one of the top ten internet radio stations in the world). In addition, Michael has been very active in yet another role, this time as an ambassador for "Concern Worldwide" www.concernusa.org. Through several cd releases which raised considerable awareness for the charity, and through his high profile visits to Haiti, Michael has helped bring the issue of poverty and hunger to the attention of the public.

The search is on for the 2011 Big Apple Rose of Tralee! We are looking for Roses, Escorts, Junior Roses and Rosebuds to compete in this weekend-long festival of events at The Millennium Broadway Hotel at 145 W. 44^th Street, in the heart of Times Square in Manhattan. The winning Big Apple Rose and Escort will go on to represent New York at the Rose of Tralee Regional Selection in Ireland. The International Rose of Tralee and Escort will serve as worldwide ambassadors for Irish heritage and culture. The 2011 Big Apple Rose of Tralee Festival will run in conjunction with the 2011 Big Apple Feis Weekend, where over 1700 Irish dancers will compete in this third annual event, also at the Millennium Broadway Hotel.

The Rose programs encourage young women (Roses, Junior Roses, and Rosebuds) and young men (Escorts) to take pride in their Irish heritage and to get involved in service to their local Irish communities. Participants in all programs are required to have some Irish ancestry. Judging is based on communication skills, poise, personality, talent, well-roundedness in life, an essay (“Lass and Colleen”), and Irish pride. All titleholders will receive a tiara and prize package and will go on to represent the New York (“The Big Apple”) Irish community at local area events.

How to Become a Rose

We are looking for young ladies of Irish heritage, ages 18-27, who would like to represent New York (“The Big Apple”) at The Rose of Tralee International Festival in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland. The winner of the Big Apple Rose of Tralee Festival will represent New York’s Irish community as she competes for the title of “International Rose of Tralee” alongside candidates from all over the world.

Applications are available for download at www.bigappleroseoftralee.com. Please fill out the application completely and mail it to the address listed on the form along with a 3” x 5” photograph. You must have your preliminary application in the hands of the Big Apple Rose of Tralee Committee no later than March 26, 2011.

In order to compete, you must secure a $250.00 sponsorship fee for your entry into the Big Apple Rose of Tralee Competition, which will be held on March 25, 26, and 27th, 2011. In the "Sponsorship Opportunities” tab of the website, you will find a section entitled “Friend of the Rose,” which will outline how to get a business to sponsor your fee.

The Big Apple Rose Selection will take place in the elegant Hudson Theatre at The Millennium Broadway Hotel in Manhattan, and all contestants will participate in the entire weekend festival, which will include music, dancing, theatre, vendors, parades, and more! The events will begin with the opening ceremonies on Friday night and will conclude when the winner is announced on Sunday evening.

We are seeking young men of Irish heritage, ages 21-30, who would like to represent New York (“The Big Apple”) as an Escort. Male Escorts must be presently unmarried and have never been previously married, and must be from Ireland or have Irish ancestry. Escorts must be available for Selection events, and if selected, be available for the International Festival Events. The entrance fee for Escorts is $250.00.

How to Become a Junior Rose

We are looking for young ladies of Irish heritage, ages 13-17, who would like to represent New York (“The Big Apple”) as a Junior Rose of Tralee. The Junior Roses will serve as “honor guards,” and will participate in a segment of the Selection night as a junior member of the Rose of Tralee. This is a wonderful way to prepare to compete in the future as a Rose. The entrance fee for Junior Roses is $100.

How to Become a Rosebud

We are looking for young ladies of Irish heritage, ages 5-12, who would like to represent New York (“The Big Apple”) as a Rosebud. Rosebuds serve as “honor guards” for the Rose candidates. They will lead the Rose candidates on stage for their interviews and make a presentation. They also serve a vital role by enabling the judges to observe how well each candidate relates to children, as the biggest Rose of Tralee fans in Ireland are young people. The Rosebuds are asked to wear a pastel-colored party dress. The entrance fee for Rosebuds is $50.

About the Weekend of Events

The Opening Ceremonies will begin on the evening of Friday, March 25th in the Eighth Floor Conference Center of The Millennium Broadway Hotel. Doors will open at 6:00pm to vendors who have booked space in advance and the general public. A Celebratory Céilí, featuring Irish traditional music by some of the tri-state area’s finest Irish seisiún and céilí musicians will begin at 7:00pm. The céilí will be open to the public and musicians and dancers of all levels are welcome! Bring your instruments and comfortable shoes and join us in welcoming the Roses, Escorts, Junior Roses, and Rosebuds in this fun and informal atmosphere. Admission is $5 in advance through Smarttix or $10 at the door.

The festivities on the evening of Saturday, March 26 will be held at the Hudson Theatre inside the Millennium Broadway Hotel. Tickets for the 6:00pm cocktail reception with an open bar, dinner, and VIP seating to the 7:30pm program are $100 and are available through Smarttix. For those wishing to purchase tickets to the program only, VIP Orchestra seating is available at $50, and General Admission seating is $35. There will be a cash bar with concessions available prior to the program beginning at 7:15pm. The reception will feature music by Joyce and Ruth O’Leary of Sephira and a performance of “Capone” by The Lynn Academy Troupe Dancers, featuring choreography by Maureen Collins. Raffle prizes will be on display for viewing. The evening’s program will begin at 7:30pm and will feature a bagpiper, a welcome invocation, renditions of the national anthems of the U.S. and Ireland, and introductions of the contestants, judges, and guests. The Junior Roses and Rosebuds will make their debut during this event. The interview and talent portions of the competition are the featured events of the Saturday program. 

The 2011 Rose Selection Gala will take place on Sunday, March 27 at The Hudson Theatre in The Millennium Broadway Hotel. The theme of the Gala is “The First of Firsts,” honoring the various “Firsts” in Irish culture in the U.S. This year’s honorees include Peter Smith, Anna O’Sullivan, Fedelmia Davis, and Joan & Cyril McNiff, the founding members of the IDTANA (Irish Dance Teachers Association of North America); Michael Flatley, the first U.S. Male World Champion Irish Dancer and the producer of the first movie about Irish Dance, Lord of the Dance in 3D, which has just opened in the U.S.; Dennis Dennehy, Mr. Flatley’s Irish dance teacher; Theresa O’Sullivan, the first U.S. World Champion Irish Dancer; Patsy McLoughlin, Ms. O’Sullivan’s Irish dance teacher; Mr. Paul F. Thiele, a lifetime supporter of Irish arts and culture; singers and violinists Joyce and Ruth O’Leary, the “Celtic Girls,” fresh off their tour with “Celtic Thunder”; and George C. Heslin, Founder and Artistic Director of The Origin Theatre Company, producer of the first festival of Irish theatre in New York. There will be a “Meet and Greet” with some of the honorees during the evening. The program will feature entertainment by the evening’s honorees, including an original play by George C. Heslin of The Origin Theatre Company; a performance of “A Journey Through Time” by The Lynn Academy Troupe Dancers, choreographed by Maureen Collins; music by Joyce and Ruth O’Leary of Sephira; as well as a showcase of emerging Irish artists. 

Final interviews of the Roses will take place and the 2011 Big Apple NY Rose, Escort, Junior Rose, and Rosebud will be crowned.

Tickets are available through Smarttix and also begin at $35 for General Admission tickets, $50 for VIP Orchestra tickets, and $100 for the 6:00pm cocktail reception with open bar, dinner, and VIP seating for the program, which begins at 7:30pm. Formal attire is required at the Rose Selection Gala.

Over 100 dancers spread St. Patrick's Day cheer in Sydney.

Members of Riverdance, Sneaky Steppers Jason Oremus and Chris Nash and some school children performed some awesome Irish Dancing to the unsuspected crowd in the spectacular Central Station.

The second annual Interceltic Festival of New York

Hats off to Charles Kergaravat and his crew for another great night of music and dance in New York City. Around 300-400 people attended last Saturday and the session continued on until 3 am.

BZH New York is a not-for-profit organization composed of Bretons and friends of Brittany dedicated to promoting the culture, economy, history, tourism, and language of the Celtic nation of Brittany, France. 

It was started in December 2006 and has since organized numerous events involving Celtic culture.

The 2nd Annual Interceltic Festival of NY presented by BZH New York was again an evening of music and dance celebrating the common heritage, traditions, culture, and story of immigration of Celtic peoples in New York City.

Thirty musicians locally based or from abroad, created a ceilidh or fest noz like atmosphere highlighting the dancing nature of Celtic music. 

Last year’s edition set a standard as one of the most convivial and lively on the New York Celtic music scene, while at the same time exploring and expanding musical horizons by representing lesser‐known musical traditions from Celtic ethnic minorities. 

The evening was also an opportunity to promote the regions, culture, economy, language, tourism and uniqueness of each individual Celtic nation.

In December 2006, Charles joined a handful of individuals to help build BZH New York from the ground up. We shared the common desire of presenting Brittany to New York City. Presenting its culture, economy, tourism and doing so in a positive fashion. I also believed that it was important to recognize the large contributions of La Grande Tribu, as Youenn Gwernig called them, for over the last 50 years. Just as the Stade Breton had rallied the Breton community in the past I felt it was important to do the same. But I also feel great satisfaction in being able to introduce everything Breton to public in NY that has generally poor knowledge of Brittany and its culture. The task can at times be a challenging one because Brittany fails to enter into one category. The standard question by some is how it exists? As a region, state, or country? I like to say that Brittany is not a state but a state of mind. The project that is BZH New York has been able to grow with the dedication and passion of its active members, and Charles is excited by the opportunity to again work with current and new members in promoting the culture that he feels deserves to be seen and heard by all.

BZH New York's vision has led to NYC witnessing and sampling many of the different flavors that la Bretagne has to offer. From marching in the St. Patrick's day parade with the Bagadou D'Auray and St. Nazaire, to Festou Noz featuring Breton bands like Skolvan, Red Cardell and Ag Ar Cheoj, to Breton product stands for Bastille day, sailing, ski weekends, Fancy Food Shows, petanque, Breton author book signings, belote, business networking, Breton dance courses, to the formation of the Bagad of NY. The vision, energy and passion of this group has led to our initial success and Charles counts on this same group and new member energy and ideas to generate their future advancement.

Pender-Keady Charity for Brain Aneurysm Foundation

Charity Dance off over 14 won by Kendal Griffler ( Early McLoughlin School)

As we start another new year on the competitive circuit, dancers jumped right back into competitive mode, keeping up with their workouts and practice over the Holiday break.

Gearing up for the 2011 season, competitive dancers must be physically fit because even short dances can be physically demanding. Also, dancers must continuously train to maintain and improve their technique, balance skills, strength and flexibility. Competitive dancing requires dedication, as many months may be spent practicing dance and developing dance steps.

Feis’s started all over the country, opening with Feis Na Cara 2011, the Pender-Keady Feis 2011 and Feis na Blian Nua 2011 in the Mid Atlantic region. There is no doubting the atmosphere, was electric. The coordinators of each Feis worked hard to bring the Irish Art of Dance and Music together. Musicians, with their spectacular music filled the rooms. Adjudicators, Tabulators and Vendors round off the inner workings of a feis

Erin Pender, Kathleen Keady and Erin Kennedy put on another spectacular Pender-Keady Feis. A great big congratulation, to all of their families and their volunteers.

The Pender-Keady Academy Feis dedicated one of their competitions in the memory of one of their students Annie Bashlow Curtin, on Sat. Jan. 15th, 2011.

The goal was to RAISE $10,000 FOR THE BRAIN ANEURYSM FOUNDATION! With the DONATE ONLINE or the TREBLE REEL FOR CHARITY COMPETITION!

Thanks to all the generous outpouring of love, support and passion, they were able to present a check for $16,000.00 to a representative, Mrs. Brady from the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.

Overall ReCap: There were 513 PC & OC Champions registered for the feis and 453 danced. 242 were awarded (53.4%).

Champion regular events ended shortly after 6:47 PM when last regular event was tabulated. There were 2 rounds PC and 3 rounds for OC, with special "round" medals awarded.

I congratulate Kathleen, Erin, their Committee as well as all the friendly, knowledgable volunteers involved with this success.

My special thanks to Jim & Amy Lucey as well as John Murphy for another year of tabulating assistance. I apologize to Amy for forgetting to recognize her help last year.

An amazing time was had by all who braved the freezing temperatures on a Saturday night last year in January 2010

The Interceltic Session was really something and certainly something you don't see all that often. The club was packed with people out for a night of music, dance, and fun."ceol agus craic"

I have been at several events and none to compare with the electric atmosphere of this event. It was nice to see so many people socializing and enjoying themselves. The room was packed and the floor was shaking with everyone joining in to learn the dances of the night. It was great to see Breandan O’Caollai, Deputy Consul General of Ireland, at one of his last events before moving back to Ireland, an informal gathering kicking off his shoes and having a pint, and the crew from Irish Network New York, Tara O’Grady and Una Moran.

There were people from France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Ireland, England, and Scotland and of course our fellow New York Clan. What made this a great event was the support of the many groups that came to support and spread the word about the event, such as Denis, and his assistants Rebecca and TJ from the New York Celtic Music Meetup Group

2nd Annual Interceltic Festival of New York

BZH New York

A not‐for‐profit organization composed of Bretons and friends of Brittany

dedicated to promoting the culture, economy, history, tourism, and

Language of the Celtic nation of Brittany, and France.

The 2nd Annual Interceltic Festival of NY presented by BZH New York will again be

an evening of music and dance celebrating the common heritage, traditions, culture,

and story of immigration of Celtic people in New York City. Thirty musicians locally

based or from abroad, will create a ceilidh or fest noz like atmosphere highlighting

the dancing nature of Celtic music.

Last year’s edition set a standard as one of the most convivial and lively on the New

York Celtic music scene, while at the same time exploring and expanding musical

horizons by representing lesser‐known musical traditions from Celtic ethnic

minorities.

The evening will also be an opportunity to promote the regions, culture, economy,

The list of performers for the event was pretty impressive with over 40 musicians representing all the Celtic nations.
