2nd annual Big Apple Feis crowns Irish dance champions

The second annual Big Apple Feis hosted over 1,000 Irish dancers, musicians, teachers, adjudicators, family and friends at The Hilton New York this past weekend. The March 13 Gala Ball honored Paul F. Thiele, Mark Howard and George C. Heslin in the hotel's Mercury Ballroom. The Gala was chaired by Unateresa Gormley, T.C.R.G., the Founder of The Big Apple Feis Performing Arts Presenters; Gerard Carson, T.C.R.G.; and Loretta Thiele, whose husband Paul F. Thiele was a big supporter of Irish cultural organizations and events throughout his lifetime. Several scholarships were awarded to winners in the Irish dance competitions in his memory.

Despite Friday's rainy weather and difficulty with transportation, crowds gathered for a fun and highly entertaining evening to cheer on entrants in the first Big Apple Irish Idol Competition and the first Big Apple Irish Bachelor & Bachelorette of the Year Competition. Judged by Actor Sean Maguire (Meet the Spartans), Loretta Thiele and Erin Kennedy, T.C.R.G., it was a unanimous winner for the Big Apple Irish Idol: Norah Tyburczy. Norah went on to give an encore performance at the Saturday night Gala. The brother and sister duo, Michael Josephson and Sheila Josephson were crowned Big Apple Irish Bachelor and Bachelorette, respectively. Competing against over a dozen bachelors from the tri-state area and even Georgia, Canada and Sweden, Michael captured the attention of both the judges and the audience with his personality and charm.

Saturday night's Big Apple Feis Gala opened with an excerpt from a play from the Origin Theatre Company's Artistic Director George C. Heslin entitled Great White American Teeth, performed by Fiona Walsh, who had the crowd laughing from beginning to end. Ann Design graciously and comically served as the evening's impromptu emcee. The play was followed by performances by dancers Kelly Dalton and Daniel Ferhenbach of The Trinity Academy of Irish Dance; Grainne Murphy on the fiddle, and Anna Colliton on the bodhran. Music during the dinner dance was provided by the all-female Irish traditional band Girsa (pictured). The six multi-talented members of the band were a huge hit with the crowd and even got some of the adjudicators onto the floor for a few ceili dances.

The Gala honored two artists who have made significant contributions in their respective disciplines and have furthered Irish culture in the U.S. and abroad: Mark Howard; the Founding Artistic Director of the critically acclaimed Trinity Irish Dance Company and the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance; and George C. Heslin; the Founding Artistic Director of the Origin Theatre Company and 1st Irish, the first Irish theatre festival in New York.

Scholarships in the amount of $500 were awarded to the top winners in the Girls Open Championship Competitions to Codie Shiels (Doherty School of Irish Dance, Belfast); Kelly McCourt (McDade-Cara School, PA); and Fiona Bradley (Gray-Gillan-Owens School, CT). Conor Regan (Inishfree School, NY) was awarded a $500 scholarship in the Open Boys Championship Competition. The Inishfree School of Irish Dance was the recipient of a $1000 scholarship for being the school with the most entries in the feis. Alesandra "Ali" Doughty (McDade-Cara School, PA) was crowned the overall Champion of the Sunday Dance-Off Competition.

Other events during the feis weekend included a Breton Dance workshop given by BZH New York; a reading by popular children's author Brenna Briggs of The Liffey Rivers Irish Dancer Mysteries; and a Fashion Show. Morgan Murray, Kristin Grant, Angelina Glick and Kian Paliani were the recipients of $50 scholarships for their notable Irish dancing costumes.

About The Big Apple Feis
The Big Apple Feis was founded by Chairpersons Unateresa Gormley, T.C.R.G., and Gerard Carson, T.C.R.G., of Belfast, Northern Ireland; a Five-Time All-Ireland and Five-Time World Champion Irish dancer. The first Big Apple Feis, held in 2009, attracted over 1500 dancers and world class adjudicators. It was the first feis to take place in Manhattan in 25 years.

About Paul F. Thiele
In the 1940s, Paul Thiele founded The Thiele Kaolin Company in Sandersville, Georgia. The company holds one of the world's largest reserves of kaolin, a clay used in ceramics and as a filler or coating for paper and textiles. Mr. Thiele served as Chairman of the Board and C.E.O. of the company from 1980 until his death in 2007. His award will be accepted posthumously by his wife Loretta, who is the Chair of the event. It was Mr. Thiele's love of Irish arts and culture and his lifetime contributions to Irish charities and organizations that we will honor at the Gala.

About Mark Howard
Born in Yorkshire, England and raised in Chicago, Mark Howard began his dancing career at the age of nine at Chicago's Dennehy School of Irish Dance. Becoming a North American champion Irish dancer himself, he launched the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance (www.trinity-dancers.com) at age 17. Experiencing great success, the school won an unprecedented 22 World Championship titles for the United States - the first when Howard was only 25. Twenty-one years since its inception, the Trinity Academy has grown from a dozen students practicing in a church basement, to the largest Irish dance program in the world. Intent on preserving the legacy of Irish dance and providing a creative outlet and professional livelihood for dancers, Howard formed the Trinity Irish Dance Company and later Trinity II and has twice been honored as one of the Top 100 Irish Americans of the Year by Irish America magazine for his innovative work in Irish dance.

About George C. Heslin
George C. Heslin is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Origin Theatre Company, (www.origintheatre.org); a not-for-profit cross-cultural group that is dedicated to the cultivation, development, and interpretation of new and emerging European playwrights and does so by offering New York audiences American premieres of their work. He is also the Founder of 1st Irish, an annual festival of Irish theatre taking place across New York.

About Girsa
Girsa (www.girsamusic.com) is an all-female traditional Irish band that hails from Pearl River, NY. Their name means "young girls" in Irish. The girls grew up in the Irish tradition, dancing and playing music for as long as they can remember.

Irish dancers: Author Brenna Briggs is coming to town!

With her toe-tapping tales, author Brenna Briggs is coming to New York! She's got the perfect series of adventures for Irish dancers, inside the quirky world of 13-year-old Irish dancer and girl detective Liffy Rivers.

Briggs is the author of the "Liffey Rivers Irish Dancer Mysteries," which The Irish World in London has compared to Enid Blyton's adventure series, "if you throw in a lot more reels and hornpipes."

Briggs was born in Pittsburgh, PA into an Irish American family where she thought cookies with green icing on Saint Patrick's Day was the best thing about being Irish.

Over the years, she has discovered there is even more to her Irish heritage.

Briggs writes monthly serialized "Liffey Rivers" short stories for Irish Dance and Culture magazine. She has published articles in Hornpipe Magazine, The Irish American Post, The Sligo Quarterly Review and many Irish American magazines and newspapers.

Visit Brenna Briggs and learn more about the "Liffey Rivers-Irish Dancer-Girl Detective" books at The Big Apple Feis March 12-13. Chat with Brenna, listen to her book readings, take pictures, enjoy a book-signing, and have a chance to win a series of her books.

She's traveling all the way from Ireland just to see you, her friends and fans.

My next Irish dance mission: Big Apple Feis II

Hi Fellow IrishCentral members,

We need your continued help and support.

I appreciate all the support and encouragement, I can write a book on how it's so hard to start something when you're the new kid on the block. Your overwhelming help and enthusiasm is breathtaking and rewarding. The support for a good cultural event for both children and adults is both far and few. We have plenty of music and drinking festivals, and they get mega support from all the big companies. The world is still very oblivious to our culture, language, traditions, pride and of all our accomplishments people seem to forget that Ireland saved the culture of the Western World.

Riverdance and Lord of the Dance put us on the map for a while, but we are so much more than even that, our historians, authors, play writes, illustrators, artists, musicians, dancers, performers, producers, educators, media, medical, business owners, leaders, politicians and cultural forums made great strides and substantial accomplishments the last century. We, as a people need to get more recognition and acknowledgement for this.

The economy and the world has changed in the last few years. The influx of new immigrants has dwindled and the economy is effected world wide. I see it in my classes, and teachers from other schools say the same. All the cultural activities and the extra curricular activities are the first to go, people are not going out and surrounding businesses are effected.

We need to stick together as a people from Ireland to Our land and all the celtic nations and vice versa, We need to promote our children, give them the fundamentals and foundation of our culture. Its up to us to keep the traditions alive.

My mission of : THE BIG APPLE FEIS PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTERS

The Big Apple Feis Presenters is dedicated to bringing performing artists and audiences together in every place and way imaginable. The Big Apple Feis achieves its goal by providing visionary thinking, professional development, resource sharing and advocacy in support of its colleagues and all those who Create and disseminate the performing arts.

It is the beauty and athleticism of Irish Dance and the common Celtic heritage that binds the peoples of Europe, the Americas, Africa and Australasia together. More importantly it is a gathering of an extended Family of dancers, teachers, parents, officials friends and fans. This huge influx of people will bring enormous spending power and opportunities for local businesses, travel companies and hotels in The New York and Mid Atlantic Region generally. Because of the diverse origins from which the patrons will come, it is also an enormous resource into which the international business community can be part of.

Niall Gibbons, the head of Tourism Ireland, was appointed as the new chief executive of Tourism Ireland in July of 2009 and wants to promote Ireland as fun, engaging and spontaneous. He states in one of his interviews that, "I think the culture of the island is the DNA. We can do allot with advertising, but underneath that people want to be able to experience the people, the warmth, the music, the food, the craic. And I can see us connecting with that for years to come." Our venue theme is different and will open up Irish Culture to a broader audience, a world wide audience as well incorporating one of the biggest parades in NYC and St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

As always the founding Director Sean Reagan ADCRG put on a spectacular event. Sean a good friend and colleague of mine. He should be proud of all his efforts and the team of parents and volunteers that supported him. Sean, a World Champion himself, comes from a very talented family, The Reagan Family of Long Island, that has expanded the Inishfree School from NY to Connecticut, Texas, New Orleans and New Mexico.

Trent Kowalik, our little boy from NY and World Champion, is the 2009 Tony Award-winning star of "Billy Elliot the Musical" on Broadway and studied under the direction of Sean Reagan and the Inishfree School before he became famous.

A New Year a New Beginning: 2010 Feis

In the Mid Atlantic we start the year with the Cara Feis in PA followed by the Pender/Keady Feis Conn. the KellyOster Feis, Conn. and the Inishfree Feis. Hope everyone is looking forward to the Hagen Feis and the New Jersey State Feis next weekend good luck to all. Followed by The Big Apple Feis/Fleadh and Events March 13th and 14th. Irish Idol March 12th, fun for all. (www.bigapplefeis.com)

Considerable passion remains among all the organizers and contestants as the competitors display their artistry and efforts and skills to the gathered audience of parents/teachers and judges. Having garnered the prize of accomplishment in the richness of this shared experience, surely every participant was a winner. There is no doubting the atmosphere. It's packed and it's electric, from the tiny tot competition "Tir Na Nog" to the Open Championship competitions. Like the ancient conventions at Tara Hill that rippled their ways out from the center, the sponsors and coordinators of each Feis worked hard to bring the Irish Art of Dance and Music together for the good. Our own Musicians, with their spectacular music lifted the people up to dance. Adjudicators Tabulators and Vendors round off the circle of these events.

Results from the Inishfree Feis, compliments of Jim Montaque from Feisweb
